Sunburnt Quilts

Quilts, Patchwork & Embroidery

Tags And Hour Glasses.

Posted on November 8, 2012 | 12 Comments

The hour glass blocks have been completed and put together.  Simple borders have been added and the result is a completed quilt top.

I had to battle with the grape vine for position on the fence.  As well as using fabrics from the Sleepytime range, I added some solids in matching pastels. It needs to wait to be quilted until I buy some white, rather than natural, coloured batting.

I have also completed a couple of smaller items, both for our Grandson. He loves playing with the tags on his toys, so these are perfect for him.

The giraffe pattern is from Craftin”It and can be found at this link.

The little square with all the tags is from Flying Blind On A Rocket Cycle and can be found at this link.

Both are super easy to make and are great little gifts.

A Busy Week.

Posted on November 3, 2012 | 17 Comments

November has arrived with a rush. Lots of busy things to do when the weather warms up here. We are starting to have a taste of the Summer to come.

Some time has been set aside for sewing in amongst all the other goings on.

Block 2 of Lynette Anderson’s Fernhill has been completed.  Here it is without its little decorative button.

I have also completed the quilting and binding on the Aussie red work quilt.

I am really pleased with the way this has turned out and once again want to thank Pauline for her gorgeous embroideries.

Here’s the back and the binding.

My plan for the weekend to have at least a little time to look through more of the entries in the Blogger’s Quilt Festival.

Then of course we have a holiday on Monday for the Melbourne Cup!! I will have to choose a horse to back!

Blogger’s Quilt Festival.

Amy's Creative Side
Time for another wonderful Blogger’s Quilt Festival. Lots of quilts to see and so much inspiration!
Thank you to Amy and all her wonderful sponsors .  Visit Amy’s Creative Side to see the details of all the exciting things that are happening.
I am delighted to have finished my 4 Patch Kaleidoscope just in time.
I think the only category it fits into for the festival is Throw Quilts as it is 53 X 69 inches in size.
All blocks in this quilt are made from the one fabric. The fabric in the quilt border is the one I used.  The way the fabric is cut and the orientation of the pieces determines how each block looks.
Some ended up with red flowers in the middle.
And others have arrangements of flower sprigs.
The quilt blocks are made from only one fabric. The blocks were made by cutting four widths of fabric at identical repeat points, then pinning them together very precisely so that they were in identical positions. I cut 3 1/2 inch strips WOF which were then cross cut into 3 1/2 inch blocks. Each pile of cuts held 4 identical blocks.
After playing around with the position of the pieces I had to decide which layout I liked and sew them together. Each of the 4 pieces had to have the same corner facing into the centre.
I always love seeing how each one comes together. Never get tired of it.
Here’s a few of the blocks as they were being made.
Once all the blocks were made, they were arranged, then sashing, corner stones and borders were added to complete the quilt. Then it was off to my LAQ. (Sorry, no web site.)  I am very pleased with the result.
All the blocks were quilted in the same pattern that really highlighted the design. Then each block was framed with gorgeous swirls.
And then there are delightful feathers in the border.
I used the red of the corner stones in the binding. I found a print with cardinals that was just right for the backing. (How did my shoe end up in the picture?)
Now to point you in the right direction if you are interested in this design. The pattern I used is called 4 – Patch Stacked Posies and is by H D Designs.
I am heading off to have a good look around all the quilts in the festival.  Hope you enjoy it, too.
Once again , a big thank you to Amy!
Here’s one last picture to finish off. Loving the sunshine and blue sky.

Weekend Cards.

Posted on October 22, 2012 | 14 Comments

I spent some lovely time over the weekend with friends at a workshop to make some cards for Christmas. (It really is going to sneak up on us!)

Chris is the lovely lady who ran the workshop. You can find her on Facebook at The Art Room. (I will find the link for that.)

We started off with this cute one with snowies.

This one is 3D.

And some yummy goodies went into this one.

Last of all we made this gorgeous stocking.

This was good inspiration to get me started on some cards for Christmas.

Starting a BOM.

Posted on October 18, 2012 | 11 Comments

I had seen several posts from people who were stitching Lynette Anderson’s mystery BOM, Fernhill. The first couple of blocks looked lovely so I decided to track it down and join in. Although 7 of the 9 blocks have already arrived, I am just finishing the first block which is the centre-piece.

As usual, I have not stayed with the colour scheme suggested. Instead I have used a range of variegated threads from several different makers.

Thankfully the next 4 blocks which border this one are a lot smaller and should, hopefully, be quicker.

Each block comes with a button. This one is a bird for the tree. I will not add that until the quilt is stitched.

I am ready for Block #2!

Twisting Away.

Posted on October 13, 2012 | 16 Comments

I have managed a finish on my Twister quilt.  It has a bright, summery feel about it and adds a bit of colour to the day.

The fabrics in the quilt are a combination of Going Coastal and Tidbits and Treasures.

Being such a busy quilt it really only needed outline quilting. I secured the blocks with stitch in the ditch and then simply stitched a half inch inside each shape.

I did straight line stitching in the border and completed the quilt with red binding.

And just to keep the seaside and Summer feel, the quilt has a crab backing.

This has definitely been a fun quilt to make and I am sure I will have to make another.

All Sorts.

The nearby city of Melbourne is well known for its changeable weather.  This Spring has certainly been one of extremes. Three days ago it was bitterly cold and snow was forecast for some of the mountain areas. Today has glorious sunshine, blue sky and a gentle breeze. No getting bored with the weather here.

But the best part is being able to take photos outside in natural light. Can’t beat it.

During the recent school holidays I participated in a bag making workshop. It was a delightful and easy bag to make.

It has a drawstring top to hide the inside goodies. What’s great about attending a workshop is seeing all the different fabric combinations used by all the participants. It looked great made in one, two and three colour combinations.

Because many of us finished the bag early we had time to make this cute little gift pouch, too, from our left-over fabrics.

A few more cards have been made.  They are similar to the ones I made last week but I have played with colour variations. I often choose not to add a sentiment to my cards until I know what I am using them for. That way I can make a general card design that is appropriate for a range of occasions.

I am not the only one who has been busy creating. Hubby has been busy knitting away again. This time he has made a small blanket using finely spun wool for our grandson. This will keep him snug and warm.

I am planning to spend time in the garden this afternoon while the sun is shining, because who knows what it will be like tomorrow!

Enjoy your day.

Little Stitching Finishes.

Posted on October 5, 2012 | 9 Comments

I have been enjoying working on some of Lynette Anderson’s small projects.

The first one is a pin cushion made from the pattern, Garden Pincushions.

I used a Cottage Garden Perle 12 thread called Oxalis for the stitching.  This went together very quickly and is finished off with the gorgeous button that came with the pattern.

The next is a little 12 X 12 block using some designs from the book, Stitch It For Christmas.

Again, I have used Cottage Garden Threads and the fabric is also part of Lynette Anderson’s Christmas range.

I have been enjoying working with some smaller projects and being able to finish them quickly.

Hopefully there will be more stitching to follow on the weekend. Have a good one.

Snow Mates.

Posted on September 30, 2012 | 11 Comments

I have completed the little wall hanging that was well under way last week. It has grown from this…

To this ………

I had wanted to play with different colours to see how they worked.

The original has been done with white ribbons for the  snowmen on a natural linen. That one is now at the LQS (Sewing Connection) as a sample, along with the patterns for the project.

The only thing  I am missing for the blue snow-mates is a little bird button. I will have to track down another one of these.

I have really enjoyed the huge selection of ribbons available to make these, but have struggled to find a reasonable selection of white buttons. The majority of small white buttons are mostly the transparent type. I am after the solid colour that really does look white. That search will have to continue.

The Snow-mates pattern has used a lot of the techniques from the Ribbon Tree pattern from last year.

And of course I had to play with different colours for that one, too.

There are now ideas running around inside my head about some small decorations using the ribbons. I will let you know if they work and will be happy to share them.

Snowflakes.

Posted on September 28, 2012 | 9 Comments

Snowflakes in September! I shouldn’t joke about that. The way our weather is here, anything is possible, even though it is Spring.

My snowflakes refer to the felt ornaments I have been making. The first group are made using a mitten shape from one of the patterns from Rachel’s Of Greenfield.

I have than added my own touch. I have use a Stampin’Up die to cut the snowflakes using the Sissix. A little bit of embroidery has been added using the pattern ideas.

Once the idea of cutting the snowflakes had worked I decided to work on some more decoration ideas I had seen on Pinterest.  I made a star template and also used the snowflake die cuts again.  Same idea with a little embroidery and lots of buttons. I started with the red felt then started to play with the pink and the lavender.

I enjoy working with felt and it is always good to have a hand sewing project like this on hand.

Just a quick note on cutting the snowflakes with the die – I found that it worked best when I ironed vliesofix onto the felt first. I also ran the die through the machine twice for each flake.

If anyone has tips on better ways to cut the felt using the dies I am interested to hear about it.
