Sunburnt Quilts

It always seems to be a regular start of the year event – attacking the UFOs. For me it is probably because quilts get put aside in the lead up to Christmas as there are other priorities for the festive season. January is very relaxed and there are no sewing commitments so the UFOs get first priority.

First finish is a small quilt as you go. I had planned to add a border but found there was not enough of the fabrics left to do that, so a change of plans left it as a smaller quilt.

Sunburnt Quilts 2016 - QAYG

I tried to take a photo is the sun but no luck with the colours.

I had better results on the fence in the shade.

Much better idea of the colours.

Here are some of the fabrics.

And still playing with colours – here it is inside.

Sunburnt Quilts 2016 - QAYG

I think this last one is the closest to the true colours. I am not a big fan of QAYG so that is why this one was easy to put aside and also why I was happy to go without a border.  Let’s hope I remember that for the future.

I finished a panel quilt as a gift for the Christmas before last and still had another to go. I made sure that was another finish for this month.

The quilting for this one was a gentle meander.

It continues to be hot here but the good part about that is the Flowering Gums are starting to bloom and are looking gorgeous. And the Australian Open is on so there is plenty of tennis to watch.

That’s a pretty note to finish on.

Gosh you’re good at finishing UFOs. The string quilt is beautiful with it’s pink and green colour palette and the stripes throughout. That gum blossom is glorious!

  • Love your quilt! The fabrics are beautiful!

Great finishes Karen! I feel like a broken record talking about ufos lately, and you are too right – it happens every January!

    Wow, those flowers are gorgeous!

Karen, this finish is beautiful. I love your colors. I’m not a huge fan of QAYG either. I found my seams were too messy. The quilt ended up being smaller than hoped also, but the grands are allowed to drag it around all they want, so there’s that. I agree with everyone, your flowering gum is gorgeous. I’m wondering if it smells as pretty as it looks. Have a great week, you’re off to a great start for 2016.

  • Yay for finishes! I like the quilt as you go one especially, but I don’t want to do one either. ;) I’ve never seen a gum tree in bloom. It is gorgeous! And is that a lemon tree in your garden?

Great finishes! I tend to work on UFO’s in January, too. We’re just watching the weather forecast, and we might be getting over 2 feet of snow later this week. Enjoy your warm temperatures and pretty flowers!

Great finishes already, and I adore all the fabrics. It’s funny how things get left as the festive season approaches….we really do get bogged down a bit. lol Love the flowering gums and go the tennis!!!
    Cheers, Anita.

I always like to start with some UFOs in the New Year to stop me starting anything new! I guess you will be glued to the Tennis tonight! I am lucky enough to be rostered onto the Hewitt game tonight! I will give you a wave!

I like your string quilt, isn’t it frustrating sometimes trying to get the right photo. Enjoy your tennis, lets hope it isn’t overshadowed by the cheating allegations.

Wow, what a difference in the colors when your quilt is in the shade. I personally love QAYG quilts and how fast they stitch up. But that being said, we all have our preferences. The colors you picked are wonderful. The little Christmas quiltie is soooooo cute. I would have never thought of neutrals and Christmas, but it’s fabulous! Wooziers what beautiful flowers on those Gum trees! I don’t know how you can do anything but sit and stare at them!

  • I love your finishes Karen and how gorgeous is that flowering gum x

    Hello Karen,

I love your finishes for the start of 2016. The workman sign in your backyard would motivate me! The tennis Yay! Sam S just got knocked out, I was willing her to win.

    Happy days.
    Bev.
