Sunburnt Quilts

Quilts, Patchwork & Embroidery

Red and White and Green.

Quilting done. Binding done. Always great to achieve a finish. This pattern, Whirlgigs, has been around at various blog sites for a while now. I started working on this one last year and managed to finish the top, but then it joined a few others in the pile waiting to be sandwiched for quilting. It […]

Hearts.

There are lots of lovely quilts around using a 9 patch design with hearts or stars. I was inspired to do one of my own using scraps collected from other quilts I had made. The borders were from fat quarters collected in my stash. The quilting is a gentle meandering pattern.

Continued Progress.

I have been able to continue working on the tops I basted and have now quilted a second one. This one now  is also waiting for binding. I have used a combination of  fat quarters in this quilt and I think the colours have a Summer feel about them. I have also been able to […]

Spring Has Sprung.

This is the name for a little wall hanging by Anni Downs of Hatched and Patched. It is a small applique piece with a little patchwork and some embroidery. Ideal when you want something easy and quick to complete. It seemed an appropriate choice with the arrival of Spring.

Catching Up.

I seem to have accumulated a few quilt tops and decided I needed to get some quilting done. Over the weekend I was able to baste 4 tops, mainly because none of them were too large. I was even able to start quilting one of the smaller ones yesterday and then managed to finish it […]

A Finished Snowball.

My pink snowball quilt is finished!  Maybe because of the colour it should be a marshmallow quilt. Just food for thought. I finally completed all the hand sewing on the binding and then had to wait for good light for a few photos. I think the next picture gives a better idea of the texture […]

QAYG Log Cabin.

Another class I attended at Quilter’s Barn when it was at Arawata was a quilt as you go log cabin. It took a little while to get used to the technique and I must admit that my logs did not always come out straight or even.  But is was a great way to work on […]

A Bake Shop Quilt.

Last year in July there was a quilt in Moda Bake Shop that caught my eye. It used half square triangles of Winter Song and was made by Jodi of Simply this that and the other. The quilt used turnovers. I wasn’t able to get turnovers but did find a couple of charm packs and […]

Animals.

The film”How To Make An American Quilt”, (1995),  led to a visit to Australia by Patty McCormick. She was the advisor for the quilts in the film. Patty conducted several workshops and I was able to attend one of them at Pakenham’s Sewing Connection. Patty displayed her quilts and gave talks on the making of […]

Stars and Stripes.

I have always enjoyed the Thimbleberries designs – fabrics, patterns and books. I chose one of their designs for an early quilt making effort. It involved a small amount of applique around the stars and then some simple piecing. Sometimes I enjoy making the smaller quilts just because they come together so quickly. And then […]
