Red Bug Bites!

Posted on May 18, 2011 | 5 Comments

I think after working with so much red and white fabric, the colour choice has rubbed off with card making as well. When visiting a local scrapping shop last week I spotted some love red papers and couldn’t resist. I have been making an effort to re-stock my card supplies so here are the newest.

Blogger’s Quilt Festival.

Posted on May 13, 2011 | 120 Comments

I am once again joining in the Blogger’s Quilt Festival organised by Amy’s Creative Side.  Thank you to Amy for giving us the opportunity to look at so many wonderful quilts. Link up to her site to see hundreds of amazing quilts on display.

This time I am displaying a work in progress. I would have loved to have had it finished but time beat me. And I know if I had rushed I would make mistakes. So here it is so far.

At this stage it already measures 50 x 50 inches. I had collected a lot of red and white patterned fabrics that I wanted to use in this type of quilt.

This is one of those quilts that has no pattern – it is just developing as it goes. I have had a lot of guidance from Sue at my LQS ( Sewing Connection).

I wanted to make a medallion quilt and needed a centre. This came by combining some different ideas from EQ.

I can’t say that needle turn is my favourite activity but I wanted to do it to have a neat finish.

I used flying geese to create a border and then the red and white stripe.

The centre was then turned so it sat en pointe and was squared up.  I realised the corner triangles  were far too bare so added a quarter of a dresden plate to each one.

The first border consists of 28 stars framed on each side by red shadow play.

I am going to build it out with one more border, this time with curves – possibly using the drunkard’s path idea. I will have to play with that idea for a bit.

But even at this stage I am very happy with how it looks.

Many thanks to Amy and all her sponsors for this wonderful opportunity to participate in the Blogger’s Quilt Festival.

Bears At The Picnic.

Posted on May 12, 2011 | 5 Comments

This little bear came home to live with us after one of our sons spent some time in Canada kayaking and snow boarding. He is not a big bear but he does have his own character.

Our children used to find this book quite amusing, too.  Gives new meaning to the saying ” a bear with a sore head”.

Lots of bears are gathering with Melody over at The House On The Side Of The Hill for today’s picnic. Take a visit to see who else is there.

Cards And Colours.

I am always fascinated by the difference colour can make in any craft activity. When I am making cards I like to use the same design and just change around the colours or the papers. These two cards have the same layout but look so totally different contrasting bold and subtle colours. I need to make a few more of these.

Bird Houses Finished.

This is not something new. It has been waiting very patiently for me to finish the quilting and the binding.

You would think that something this small should have been quickly off the list.  But it kept being put to the back of that list.

Nothing fancy on the back.  I am surprised to see the pin marks still showing up on the backing fabric.

Stitching Progress.

Happy Mother’s Day to all the Mums out there. Enjoy your special day!

I have been working on this embroidery from Leanne Beasley of Leanne’s House.  I only have to add the 3 butterflies – needle turn applique.

And also making slow progress on the jacobean embroidery.

Cat Quilt.

Still working on this one. I added a final border and some more snail trails in the corners. Just need a little more time to sandwich this and quilt. One day.

Butterfly Cards.

Just for something different, I sat down to catch up on my card making. I like to keep a little stockpile but have not kept up of late.  I need to make quite  a few more.

I like to try out a design in several different colourways. These all use SU papers.

Emerson.

Time to join in the picnic again with Melody over at The House On The Side Of The Hill. Take a visit there to see who else will be at the picnic. I am delighted to have the internet back and be able to join in again!

Emerson is a little bear that was given to me by the children in my class many years ago. We were travelling to the USA and he came with us. He appeared in many photos that were sent back to the class so they could follow our travels.

I have also included some of my favourite bear books. The stories of Corduroy were well loved by our children when they were little. I hope to share them with our grandchildren, too.

Little Stitches.

Lovely to be back. I really missed being able to check in on all that has been happening.

Really disappointed with the lack of service from Telstra – phone still not sorted out after 11 days!

I have been making the most of my time with quilts and embroideries. I decided to get on the band wagon and start the stitcheries by Natalie Bird of The Birdhouse in her book, Tis The Season. They are gorgeous little stitcheries and very quick and easy to complete.

I have chosen to use a Cottage Garden thread called Running Postman ( love that!). It varies in colour from a pinkish red through to a pinkish brown. I have also strayed from the colours in the sample. I am looking at including greens and having a red to match the thread.

I have also been trying out a different type of needle. I have always used an embroidery needle but recently have been encouraged to try a longer quilt basting needle.  After only a short while I have found it very easy to use and it seems to give me a lot more control over my stitches. It doesn’t suit everyone but I am always prepared to try new ideas and see for myself.
