Sunburnt Quilts

Quilts, Patchwork & Embroidery

Goodbye, January.

Posted on January 31, 2013 | 14 Comments

January has flown by quickly which probably means it has been a very busy month. Hard to believe tomorrow is a new month.

I have continued to enjoy my Fernhill BOM from Lynette Anderson. Block 3 is done and I am working on number 4. It is an enjoyable stitchery and I have set no deadline for completion. It is an easy one to pick up and take when we head off somewhere.

Fernhill Block 3

And I am still working on that card stockpile. I wanted to make a few that can be used for several purposes so I have not added sentiments to them. I will do that when I use the card. I decided to give the cuttlebug a workout.

That’s it for now. See you in February.

Happy Australia Day.

Posted on January 26, 2013 | 14 Comments

Happy Australia Day to all Australians, where-ever you happen to be living today.

We have a holiday long weekend and there are events happening all around the country to celebrate the occasion.

Love the Google emblem on the homepage for Australia Day, today.

Last week I had a lovely day with a group of friends in a Stampin’Up workshop.  We decided we needed to use a lot of our left over papers to make some cards and these are some that Chris (our SU rep) came up with.

Now that I have been motivated back into action, I need to get to work to build  up my stockpile of cards for this year.

Enjoy your day!

Stripes and Stars.

Posted on January 24, 2013 | 11 Comments

Here are the stripes!

This little zebra has recently found a new home with our grandson.

He is made using a pattern called Savannah Chaps, by Barbara Prime,  which also includes and elephant and a rhino.  It was purchased through Ravellry.

Very easy to make and good directions. I think there may have to be a few more of these.

It seems to have been a very busy time around here for the past two weeks. Lots of catching up with friends with lunches and many stitching days.

Unfortunately we also had a little scare with a fire breaking out at the end of our road, one day last week. Sadly it was one of 6 deliberately lit in the area on that day. We  were very lucky because there was not a strong wind to fan the flames and it was under control in  a matter of hours. But it still took over 100 fire-fighters to do this. We are very grateful to all these volunteers for the wonderful work they do.

Our state is on high alert again today with a forecast of strong winds and high temperatures. There are several fires still burning and there are concerns these may again head toward some towns.  I hope everyone can stay safe.

One of the stitching days I went to on the weekend was a class with Lyn Brown that was held atCandleberry  Country in Yarragon. It was a making a quilt using freezer paper stars and a small amount of applique. It wil have at least 12 green fabrics in all the stars and the applique. This is just the start.

I think I have to make 36 of these so I had better get a move on!

2013 Is Well Under Way.

Posted on January 13, 2013 | 15 Comments

Time to get back on the horse. Or, to be real, time to get back to my blog.

The weather has made sure that we are having a real mixed bag to start the year. Lots of very hot days as well as crazy cool ones for this time of year, too.  Unfortunately many states have been experiencing bush fires and some are still burning.

On a positive side, several stores in my area are having some very good sales on quilting fabrics. Have to make the most of that!

My first show and tell for the year is a Christmas wall hanging. This was started in one of my classes before Christmas, but I knew with all that was planned that it would have to wait until after the New Year.

Lots of little yo-yos  are used to decorate the house.

They are used to make the trees.

And the lollipop flowers.

This quilt is based on a pattern called Lollipop Lane by Marcia Layton.

I am looking forward to getting back into a sewing routine, but I made the mistake of starting to Spring clean through the house. ( Yes, I know it’s Summer!) As a result I am making quite a mess in the name of cleaning. I am sure this urge will pass soon!!

Happy New Year!

Sunshine And Snow.

Posted on December 30, 2012 | 13 Comments

No sewing in this post! Totally holiday snaps.

We had a lovely family holiday at Edrom Lodge near Eden, on the south coast of NSW. Our extended family booked out the whole lodge and had a wonderful Christmas together.

The grounds were beautiful and we had a short walk over the lawn to reach the swimming beach.

A view of the side of the house.

And another of the front.

This is the view from the kitchen window of another beach to the side.

We were able to set up 4 trestle tables  for our Christmas meal. And this was only one of the side verandah. So much space!

Several yachts came in to anchor over night as it is an extremely well protected bay.

And this is the view from the front of the lodge.

I don’t think you could ever get tired of looking at that view.

As a comparison, this is the scene that greeted  our US family this morning.  One extreme to the other!

Best wishes to all for a safe, happy and healthy New Year!

Christmas Wishes.

Posted on December 22, 2012 | 11 Comments

The last of the Christmas sewing has been completed.

I had this group of stockings to complete for Christmas day. They now only need the name tags to be added. They are also made and I will stitch them on this evening.

We are all looking forward to a lovely break over Christmas.

Best wishes to all for the Christmas Season. Have a lovely time with your family and friends.

Cheers.

Santa Bags.

Posted on December 10, 2012 | 14 Comments

I have recently completed two little Santa Bags.  Not unusual for this time of year  except that I have only learnt to crochet in the last month and this is the first thing I have made.

These are a lovely size for young children.

The Christmas cards are finally made and now being prepared to post. I do like the colours for these.

Hope your Christmas preparations are going well.

Owls, Again.

Posted on December 1, 2012 | 17 Comments

Lots of owls in the garden, today. Daytime ones.  I have a group of friends who get together just before Christmas and we all bring little gifts to swap.  These hot pads are the start of my little collection of gifts to give. They come from a pattern named Hot Who and it’s from Susie C Shore Designs.

I found this little owl friend for the Christmas tree.

I have been trying to keep up with some of my quilting and have so far sandwiched 4 quilts.

The bow tie blocks are also ready to be sewn together and hopefully sandwiched, too.

Good luck with all the Christmas shopping that has to be done …. and wrapped. Hope you get to do a little of your own sewing, too.

2012 Christmas Quilt Show.

Posted on November 27, 2012 | 47 Comments

I have only just realised that the 2012 Christmas Quilt Show has started. This year it is being organised by Michele at Quilting Tutorials. Hop on over to have a look at the lovely Christmas inspiration.

I have chosen one of my favourites as my entry for this year. It is titled Reindeer Mischief and is a pattern from Keryn Beischer. ( Unfortunately many of her patterns are no longer available.)

It is a small wall hanging that I like to display every year, because it has a humorous approach to the festive season.

My quilt definitely belongs in the Christmas section of the quilt show.

And just to keep the mood going, here is a Santa from my collection.

Head on over to see all the lovely quilts on show.

In The Middle.

Posted on November 17, 2012 | 12 Comments

I seem to be in the middle of so many projects at the moment. That’s fine as long as it all leads to finishes. I am about to have a basting weekend. I have several small quilts that need to be sandwiched ready for quilting, so my trestle table is out and ready for work.

I have been making these 3D Bow Tie blocks using charm packs from Deb Strain‘s Fresh range. I can remember buying these packs a while back because of the lovely fresh colours, so the name is appropriate.

I have nearly completed all the blocks to this stage and am looking forward to playing with the layout.

I have also pieced a very simple mini quilt. I am going to have a go at hand quilting this one using a lovely variegated thread from Cottage Garden Threads. Now those who know me well will be rolling around laughing at this stage because I have never done any quilting by hand. All I can say is I am starting sensibly as the mini only measures 50 X 50 cm. So maybe I do have a chance of finishing it!

When I was in Spotlight recently I saw this very cute Summer Christmas fabric. I only bought a fat quarter of each so had to really juggle how to use it. I have made it into a table cloth to use outside. I will trim and tidy it up and then add the backing. I am thinking of not putting any wadding in it so will have to see how it looks before sewing it together.

I thought this could look lovely outside on a table in the garden.

Well, that’s my weekend planned out. Hope you have some stitching time, too.
