Half Rectangle Triangles.

Posted on | March 20, 2026 | 10 Comments

I have worked often with half square triangles, but have only rarely played with rectangles.

When I received this fabric bundle, I thought it was a good chance to see what I could do with the half rectangle triangles. The fabric is called Bloom Wildly by Clothworks and came as 30cm strips.

It took a little bit of juggling and some sketchy diagrams to work out how to use the colours in diagonal stripes. There were several colours from the range that were not included as they were very pale. They will find a home in another quilt one day.

This one ending up at 54 by 65 inches.

I had to find a different range for the outer borders as I did not have any yardage of this range. A dark blue with a spot was used for the inner border and the binding, and a green for the outer border. The green was also the backing.

I used straight line quilting following the lines of the triangles, but added some meandering in the borders.

It is very pleasing to be back into the swing of completing some quilts.

During the week I caught up with a group of friends at the NGV, (National Gallery of Victoria), to see the Rei Kawakubo and Vivienne Westwood exhibition. It was thoroughly enjoyable as it covered my age of fashion perfectly. I was able to recognise most of the displays. That doesn’t mean I wore them, though.

Here are a few of Vivienne Westwood’s designs that would not have been in my wardrobe, but look gorgeous.

This last one is the dress that is similar to the one worn in the Sex And The City film. A bit different to her earlier designs that were worn by the Sex Pistols!

The weekend beckons. Hope you have a good one planned.

Cheers, Karen

  • I love your HSR quilt, Karen. Great design of diagonal stripes without it being obvious. And the green border and backing are the best. I’m not familiar with Rei Kawakubo’s designs, and you didn’t include any photos of her’s, so I googled it and her designs look pretty out there. I wonder what you observed of her designs. Having lived in Japan, I’m interested.

love the rectangle/triangles, colours look a little christmassy?
beautiful dresses. I was at the gallery on saturday but on Nana duties so we spent most of our time in the children’s part colouring and dancing.

The last quilt top I made was with these half-triangle rectangles. Or are they half-rectangle triangles as you say???? Anyway your quilt finish is great. You did a wonderful job of matching the border with the range of fabrics in the quilt. And the exhibition looks great. Maybe I should make the effort to come and see it. Although with the fuel crisis, we are limiting our travel to necessities like medical appointmnets etc. Hopefully we will over it soon!

  • Your quilt turned out well! I’ve only made one with half-rectangles. Gorgeous gowns!

  • Karen, that half rectangle quilt is stunning! I will have to make another one! I love how you merged all the colors so beautifully. They seem to be on the move! Great job!!!

  • Your quilt looks great Karen.

Your quilt turned out beautifully. And those gorgeous dresses. The sad thing is, as well as being out of our price range, guess we wouldn’t be invited to anywhere special enough to wear them!

  • That’s a stunning quilt! The borders are perfect for this line of fabric. That green pops.
Not that I want to dress to the nines, but these are gorgeous dresses. I imagine they’re a bit heavy, but wow! I love exhibits with fabric no matter how it’s used

Beautiful triangle quilt, Karen. Love the colors. Interesting exhibition. I don’t think the climate here is the right place for wearing those dresses!
